Another Vintage Thursday

I just thought I would use today to post some nostalgic thoughts. I know I have mentioned before that my mom didn't save much from my childhood, but things that were really important to me, I somehow managed to keep in my possession. I was a complete horse freak. The first book I ever purchased for myself was about a horse, I was in fourth grade. And I have read probably every horse book written, seen every horse movie made (multiple times), got a horse as a souvenir from every vacation, and had more horse toys than any kid on the block. I can even remember pretending I WAS a horse. You know about Sam and his horse pal, Rico - maybe it's genetic. Anyway, I digress - since I loved my horses so much I have always let my children and now my grandchildren play with these treasures. Then - I happened upon a collectible book and discovered what these keepsakes were worth! I immediately began gathering up the herd only to discover many broken legs and chipped ears. This contributed to a drastic reduction in value:( I rescued the survivors and have given them places of honor in my "Good Ole Days" room. ( I should have lived in the White House as I have an affinity to name my bedrooms these days) So now I present the loves of my childhood....

This is Black Beauty and Smokey Joe (yes, I remember their names and I realize they are not that original)
Snowfire is named after the star of my favorite horse move of the same name, which I know I have seen at least twenty times. Oddly enough, it kept playing at the little theater in Yukon over and over again. (Incidentally, when that place burned to the ground people made a contest of counting the rats as they escaped - no joke)

And lastly, King the palomino stallion - Snowfire is worth more money but King was always my favorite!I leave you with a picture of the oldest toys I still possess from my childhood. They are probably approaching antique status. Now, I know what you are thinking -that is some bear! My girls shudder when they see him, they are certain he gives them nightmares as adults and that children should be shielded from his presence. Out of all the cool things my mother could have saved for me - they are puzzled that Blacky made the cut. And yes, that is Peter Pan sitting on his lap - he survived because my cousin rescued him from my grandparents and gave him back to me - I loved that boy:)

I loved horses too as a kid but probably not as much as you. I read "Smoky, the Cow Horse," "My Friend Flicka," Misty of Chincoteague," (and all the other Marguerite Henry books over and over! I didn't have toy horses but I did have a real one! I'll have to blog about her one of these days! Love your "Good Old Days" Room!

I am currently shuddering about the bear, and I don't think the picture truly does it justice!
