Flashback Friday - Rodeo Days!

Things have been very busy around here - we've had company most of the week. I love it, but I have not been on the computer at all. I just thought I would post a quick "flashback" post, since it is rodeo. Some of you may be unaware that I was once a cowgirl through and through. That could possibly be an exaggeration, but I did spend many a day riding a little welsh pony named Honey around the countryside in my youth. One summer we even brought my "steed" to town so I could exhibit my horsemanship in the annual Yukon Rodeo Parade. This lofty occasion necessitated a shopping trip to the local western wear shop, of course. As you can see, I looked quite spiffy in my "Rodeo" attire, complete with bolo tie and now cowboy boots. My parents explained that the purchase of expensive boots for one appearance in the rodeo parade was much too extravagant for the family budget so I made do with moccasins. Apparently, the moccasins went well with my little brother's outfit, since he sported the frontiersman look complete with fringe. Please notice the saddle, we purchased it unfinished and my dad died it red and tooled our last name "Rice" into the leather. What a sharp saddle it was, even if the rider's clothes (or perhaps bare legs) became a lovely shade of red after spending much time in close contact with it...

Looking back, I realize that Honey carried quite a burden when she hauled me around (it looks like my feet might possibly drag the ground if it weren't for those stirrups for stick them in). But Honey was up to the challenge and together we even rode in the Rodeo's "Grand Entry" that year! My wildest dreams were realized when I got to live the life of a "real cowgirl" for one brief moment in time.

Becky, I LOVE it!! I am right in each one of your stories, imagining you riding in the parade, and feeling your excitement as you got your new outfit. Thanks for all the posts!!

I was just searching for blogs of ranchers, ropers and cowboys and ran on to yours. I can see by the picture of your grandbabies that you are a Mimi too! We have 4 and soon to be 5 grandchildren. What a blessing they are. We live in Idaho and would love to keep in touch.
